Can I redesign my old jewellery?

Can I redesign my old jewellery?

Absolutely!

The best part is that the possibilities are endless. I personally love when clients come to us looking to remodel or redesign their old jewellery. Like so many things in life, our style evolves over time—what once felt perfect, like a bold Art Deco ring, may no longer suit your everyday look.

But rather than letting it sit in a jewellery box collecting dust, why not repurpose your old jewellery into something you truly love and will wear? You already have the materials, which makes it a brilliant way to refresh your collection without the cost of starting from scratch.

The same applies to sentimental pieces. They may hold priceless meaning, but if the design isn’t quite you anymore, we can transform inherited or meaningful jewellery into a new piece that still tells your story—just in a way that feels more ‘you’.

During my time designing bespoke jewellery, one piece in particular stands out as a perfect example of this process. It’s a beautiful flower cocktail ring we created for Marinella, using her existing stones.

Marinella came to us with an array of stunning stone set jewellery pieces, including a mix of rubies and diamonds. Her vision was to create a statement cocktail ring—something bold, unique, and a real showstopper, while making the most of the materials she already had.

The first step in our bespoke jewellery design journey was to carefully sort and inventory her stones, followed by sketching a selection of initial designs. This stage is often the most detailed, especially when working with a client’s own jewellery, as we want to ensure the final piece not only looks beautiful but also works perfectly with the stones and metal available. It’s also where I gather all the important details about your style, preferences, and design choices.

Once Marinella approved the design, I created a resin model—a technically accurate version of the ring. This is one of my favourite stages, as it allows you to see and feel how your piece will look before we begin crafting it. It gives real peace of mind and helps confirm proportions and sizing before moving forward.

From there, we move into the making process. Whether we are repurposing your existing gold or using new metal, I usually advise around 3–5 weeks for this stage, depending on how intricate the design is. For Marinella’s ring, each leaf was individually hand-set by Gavin, our diamond setter, before being assembled into one final, striking piece.

Marinella was involved throughout the entire process, and presenting her with the finished ring was such a special moment. It’s a wonderful example of how you can transform old jewellery into a bespoke piece that feels completely new. It was a pleasure to create.

If you’re considering transforming existing jewellery into a new piece, I would be delighted to arrange a no-obligation consultation to explore your ideas.
