Bespoke cost is more controllable than people expect

Most people come to bespoke with one worry: they will fall in love with a design, then find the price has climbed beyond what they had in mind. A better process works the other way round. We talk about the budget early, then use the design to make that budget work sensibly.

No fixed rule tells you what to spend on an engagement ring. The old three-month salary idea belongs in the bin, because it turns a personal decision into pressure. Your budget should come from what feels comfortable for you, then the ring choices should follow.

Bespoke is not the costly part on its own

The stone usually moves the quote most

Two rings with the same overall budget can land at different prices because the centre stone changes the balance. Many people blame the word bespoke, but the stone usually carries a large share of the cost conversation.

Natural diamonds bring several quality levers

Natural diamonds are assessed through four diamond features known as the 4Cs: colour, clarity, cut and carat weight. GIA created this grading system, and jewellers use those terms because they give you a shared language for comparing stones.

Plainly put, carat weight is the size measure, cut affects how the diamond handles light, colour describes how colourless it is, and clarity looks at natural marks inside or on the stone. A quote that mentions these points should be explained in everyday words, because you need to know what you are paying for.

Lab-grown diamonds change the budget conversation

Lab-grown diamonds can open up different design choices within a budget. Some couples choose them because they want a larger centre stone, others because they want to keep more of the budget for the setting.

Reports need careful reading. From October 1 2025, GIA revised its evaluation service for D-to-Z lab-grown diamonds and uses descriptive terms such as Premium or Standard based on clarity, colour and cut. That matters because lab-grown and natural diamond paperwork should not be treated as if every label works in exactly the same way.

Size alone is a poor test of quality

A bigger diamond does not automatically make a better ring. A smaller stone with a stronger cut or a better fit for the design can be the wiser choice.

Workshop time is part of the ring, not a hidden extra

Once a design is agreed, the work behind the quote begins. The ring still needs design development, approval, stone setting, finishing and careful checking before it is ready to wear.

Design work covers the move from idea to a ring that can actually be made. Computer-aided design, often shortened to CAD, can help you see the shape and proportions before metal is worked.

Setting work is where the stone is secured properly in the ring. The style of setting affects both the look and the time needed to make the piece.

Finishing work gives the ring its final surface, fit and detail. Small changes at this stage still need skilled hands, because a ring is worn every day and must be comfortable as well as good to look at.

Useful questions sound simple, and they should. We would want you to ask:

• Which part of the ring is taking the largest share of the budget? The answer may be the centre stone, the metal choice or the setting work.
• What can be changed if the price needs to come down?
• Has the budget been discussed before the design goes too far? That keeps the design conversation grounded.
• Can an inherited diamond or old gold be assessed for use in a new ring?
• What is included after the design is approved, including making, finishing and any agreed checks?

Inherited stones or gold can be a lovely starting point, but suitability has to be checked by the jeweller before it is built into a new design.
