THE GEMSTONE

What is a lab grown diamond?

A lab grown diamond is a real diamond. It has the same chemical makeup, the same hardness, and the same sparkle as a natural diamond. The only difference is where it comes from. Instead of being mined from the earth, it is created in a laboratory using advanced technology that recreates the heat and pressure found in nature.

You cannot tell the difference with the naked eye. Even a trained gemmologist needs specialist equipment to distinguish between the two. Both types are graded using the same criteria — cut, colour, clarity, and carat — and both receive independent certification.

We source all our lab grown diamonds with IGI (International Gemological Institute) certification, so you always know exactly what you are getting.

The Benefits

Why choose a lab grown engagement ring?

The most common reason is value. A lab grown diamond typically costs a fraction of a natural diamond with the same specifications. That means you can choose a larger or higher-quality stone for your budget, or spend less and put the difference towards your wedding or your first home.

But value is not the only reason. Many of our clients choose lab grown because the origin is fully traceable. You know exactly where and how the diamond was made. There is no ambiguity about the supply chain.

Others simply prefer the idea that their ring was created using modern technology rather than mining. The decision is personal, and there is no wrong answer. Lorraine, our GIA certified gemmologist, can walk you through both options during your consultation so you can make the choice that feels right for you.

How we design your lab grown engagement ring

Every ring we make starts with a conversation. You do not need to arrive with a finished design in mind. Most of our clients begin with a rough idea or a few photos they have saved, and some have no idea where to start. That is completely fine.

At your first appointment, you will sit down with Meghan or Lorraine at our Pantiles showroom, or connect via video call. Together you will talk through what you like, what suits your lifestyle, and what fits your budget. We will show you examples of previous work and help shape your ideas into a design.

Once the design is agreed, Gavin creates a CAD (computer-aided design) render so you can see your ring in 3D before any metalwork begins. We source your lab grown diamond from trusted, certified suppliers and match it to the design. Then your ring is handcrafted in our workshop at The Pantiles. Nothing is outsourced. Your ring is made by the same hands that designed it.

Most lab grown engagement rings take between 2 and 8 weeks from approved design to finished ring. If you have a proposal date in mind, let us know and we will plan around it.

How much does a lab grown engagement ring cost?

Lab grown engagement rings start from around £2,000. The final price depends on the size and quality of the diamond, the type of metal, and the complexity of the design.

Because we make everything in our own workshop and source stones directly, there are no middlemen adding to the cost. A bespoke lab grown engagement ring is often more affordable than buying a comparable ring off the shelf from a high street jeweller.

We also offer 0% APR finance for up to 24 months, so you can spread the cost with no interest charges. Find out more about our finance options.

Styles and settings

Because your ring is bespoke, you are not limited to what is in a display case. You choose the diamond shape, the metal, and the setting style. Below, you'll find some of the most popular choices our clients make.

Diamond shapes include round brilliant, oval, emerald cut, pear, cushion, marquise, and radiant. Each shape catches light differently, and we can explain how each one will look once it is set.

For metals, most of our lab grown engagement rings are made in 18ct white gold, 18ct yellow gold, 18ct rose gold, or platinum. We will help you choose based on your preference and skin tone.

Setting styles range from a classic solitaire to halo, trilogy, pavé (where small diamonds are set closely across the band), and bezel (where the diamond is held within a rim of metal). Every setting is handcrafted in our workshop to hold the stone securely and let as much light through as possible.

Certified stones, qualified hands

Every lab grown diamond we set comes with independent certification from IGI. The certificate confirms the diamond's cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight, and states clearly that it is laboratory grown.

Lorraine is a GIA certified gemmologist and assesses every stone before it is set. Gavin is a Hatton Garden trained master jeweller with over 20 years of bench experience. Between them, you are speaking directly with the people who select your diamond and make your ring. That is not something most jewellers can offer.

YOUR QUESTIONS

Common questions about lab grown engagement rings

  • Are lab grown diamonds real diamonds?

Yes. A lab grown diamond has the same carbon structure, the same hardness (10 on the Mohs scale), and the same optical properties as a natural diamond. It is a real diamond in every measurable way. The only difference is its origin.

  • Can you tell the difference between lab grown and natural?

Not with the naked eye. Both look identical when set in a ring. Specialist laboratory equipment is needed to tell them apart. Your IGI certificate will state whether the diamond is natural or lab grown.

  • Will a lab grown diamond last as long as a natural one?

Yes. Lab grown diamonds are just as durable as natural diamonds. They do not fade, cloud, or lose their sparkle over time. A lab grown engagement ring is made to be worn every day for a lifetime.

  • Do you also offer natural diamond engagement rings?

We do. We work with both natural and lab grown diamonds and can show you certified options in both during your consultation. There is no right or wrong choice — it comes down to your personal preference and budget. You can read more on our natural vs lab grown diamond page.

  • Can I see loose lab grown diamonds before choosing?

Yes. We source certified lab grown diamonds from trusted suppliers and can show you a selection of stones that match your brief. You can also browse our loose lab grown diamond collection online.
