A single London Blue Topaz sits at the centre of this ring, measuring 10.23mm by 7.25mm by 6.36mm and weighing 4.5 carats.
London Blue is the deepest of the blue topaz shades, a dark inky blue rather than the paler sky and Swiss blues.
This one is precision cut, which is worth explaining because it is the reason the stone looks the way it does. Most coloured stones are cut by eye and by hand. A precision cut stone is cut to calculated angles on a machine, so every facet meets exactly where it should.
This one has 67 facets plus 12 girdle facets, arranged in two-fold mirror image symmetry on a 96 index. In practice that means light entering the stone returns evenly across the whole face instead of leaking out of the back, so the blue stays bright rather than going dark in patches as you move it.
Most topaz is heat treated or irradiated to produce its colour, and London Blue in particular is almost always treated this way. We are happy to confirm the treatment of this stone before you buy, so please just ask.
The stone sits in a sculptural collet, which is a shaped mount holding the stone rather than a plain rub over rim, so the metal is part of the design rather than just a fixing.
The band is 18ct yellow gold, hallmarked so the metal content is independently verified. Warm yellow gold against a deep blue stone is a strong contrast and the reason this reads as a dress ring rather than something to wear every day.
