Understanding

What Bespoke Really Means

Plenty of people assume bespoke means expensive, slow, and only for couples who already know exactly what they want. None of that holds true here.

A bespoke engagement ring is simply one designed around you and made by hand, not chosen from a tray. You bring a feeling, a budget, or a photo of something you like, and we shape a design from there. Everything is made by hand in our own workshop at The Pantiles, so your ring never leaves our care.

Working directly with the maker also tends to cost less than you would think. There is no shop markup on a ready-made piece and no middleman, so your money goes into the ring itself. That is why a handmade ring can come in below the price of an equivalent one in a high street window.

Introducing

The People Who Make Your Ring

Your ring is designed and made by Gavin Marsh, a master jeweller and stone setter with over 50 years at the bench. Gavin trained in Hatton Garden, where he made jewellery for well-known high street brands and a Rolex watch company before opening the workshop with Lorraine in 2020.

Lorraine Marsh and her team are GIA and BAJ trained design consultants. They will guide you through choosing the right stone for your budget and design.

You speak to the same people from your first idea to the finished ring. A small, family-owned workshop where you deal directly with the maker.

Engagement Ring Styles We Make

Any style is possible, and we make them all by hand. Here are the most popular ones, in plain terms.

01

Solitaire.

A single centre diamond on a clean band. The classic, and our most requested design.

02

Halo.

A circle of small diamonds around the centre stone, which makes the stone look larger and adds sparkle.

03

Trilogy.

Three stones set together, often chosen to represent your past, present, and future.

04

Pavé (say "pah-vay").

Tiny diamonds set close along the band so it catches the light all the way round.

05

Bezel (rub-over).

A smooth metal rim that wraps around the stone. The most secure setting, and a good choice for busy hands.

06

Emerald cut and art deco.

Clean step cuts and geometric lines for couples who like a vintage look.

We work in any shape too, including round, oval, pear, and cushion, and we design your ring to sit flush against a future wedding ring.

What a Bespoke Engagement Ring Costs

Bespoke engagement rings here start from around £2,000, and we work to your budget from there. To put that in context, the average spend on an engagement ring in the UK in 2026 is roughly £2,247, so a handmade ring from £2,000 sits in line with what most couples spend, not above it.

The centre stone is the biggest factor in the final price. After that comes the metal, with platinum costing more than gold, then the complexity of the design and the number of smaller diamonds.

Choosing a lab grown diamond is one way to make your budget go further, since it costs less than a natural diamond of the same size and look. You can see our lab grown diamond rings or read our guide on choosing between a natural or lab grown diamond to weigh up both.

You can also spread the cost with 0% finance over up to 24 months.

Not sure where to start on budget? We will talk it through, with no pressure.

How the Design Process Works

I

Your consultation.

Free, in person at The Pantiles or by video call. Bring photos and ideas, or nothing at all. This is where we get to know what you are after.

II

Your design.

We sketch the ring and create a CAD render, a 3D computer image, so you can see exactly how it will look before any metal is cut.

III

Choosing your diamond.

Your dedicated design consultant helps you pick a stone within your budget, graded against the four Cs of cut, colour, clarity, and carat.

IV

Making your ring.

Gavin makes your ring by hand at the bench, from setting the stones to the final polish.

V

Collection and care.

We size your ring, talk you through wearing it, and clean and polish it for life.

Most rings take 2 to 8 weeks to make. A complex design or a rare stone can take longer. If you have a proposal date in mind, tell us early and we will plan around it.

FAQ Section V1 - The Diamond Setter
How much does a bespoke engagement ring cost in Tunbridge Wells?

Bespoke engagement rings start from around £2,000. The final price depends mainly on the centre stone, the metal, and the design. We work to your budget and offer 0% finance over up to 24 months.

How long does it take to make a bespoke engagement ring?

Most bespoke rings take 2 to 8 weeks from design to collection. A more involved design or a rare stone can take longer. If you have a proposal date, tell us at the start and we will work to it.

Do I need to know what I want before I book?

No. Many couples come to us with only a rough idea, or none at all. The consultation is where the design takes shape, and we can also help you check your ring size while you are with us.

Can you make a ring using my own diamond or an heirloom?

Yes. We can reset your own diamond or remodel an inherited ring into a new design, keeping the stones or gold that matter to you.

What is the difference between a natural and a lab grown diamond?

A lab grown diamond has the same look, hardness, and chemistry as a natural one, but it costs less. That means your budget can stretch to a larger or higher quality stone. Both are real diamonds.

Will my engagement ring and wedding ring fit together?

Yes. We design your engagement ring with a future wedding ring in mind, so the two sit flush against each other. Wedding bands start from around £1,000.

From The Workshop

Where to Start

After more than 50 years at the bench, the advice The Diamond Setter gives every couple is the same. Start with two things: how the ring will be worn day to day, and the budget you are comfortable with.

Someone who works with their hands needs a lower, secure setting that will not catch. Someone who wants as much sparkle as possible might lean towards a halo. Get those two things clear, and the design tends to fall into place on its own.
