French Set Bypass Engagement Ring with Blue Diamond Accents, 18ct Gold or Platinum

This is a bypass engagement ring, which means the band does not meet in a closed circle at the top. Instead the two ends pass each other and curve around the centre stone from opposite directions, so the ring wraps rather than encircles.

It gives the setting an open, asymmetric line, and it means the shoulders can carry detail on both sides without the design looking heavy.

Your centre diamond is a 1ct stone chosen on the next page, which lets you decide where your budget goes.

Two natural white marquise diamonds of 4mm by 2mm sit either side of it. A marquise is pointed at both ends, so set alongside a bypass band the points follow the curve and lead the eye along the shoulders rather than stopping at the centre.

Thirty two smaller stones are set into the shoulders themselves: sixteen iced blue diamonds of 1.2mm and sixteen natural white diamonds of 1mm to 1.2mm.

Alternating the two gives the shoulders a run of colour that shifts between blue and white as the ring moves.

The blue diamonds are heated, which is a treatment used to produce or deepen colour in a stone, and we state that plainly because UK rules require treatments to be disclosed. We are also happy to confirm the origin of the blue diamonds, whether natural or lab grown, before you buy, so please just ask.

The stones are French set, which means the metal is cut away beneath and between them so each sits in an open V shaped setting rather than a solid wall of metal.

Less metal shows from the side and more light reaches the stones from underneath, which matters particularly with coloured stones, because light passing through them is what makes the colour read rather than just the surface.

Choose 18ct yellow gold, 18ct white gold, 18ct rose gold or platinum, hallmarked so the metal content is independently verified.

Each ring is made to order in our own workshop at The Pantiles in Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent, and takes two to three weeks.

Because every coloured stone is different, the blue in your ring will not be identical to the photographs, which show one example rather than a fixed standard. You are welcome to see the stones before we set them.
