Why Do Rings Feel Tighter in the Summer?

Your rings may feel tighter in hotter months, a common concern among customers. Learn why this happens, how to address ring fitting issues, and signs that your rings are too tight.

Understanding how Seasonal Changes Affect Ring Sizes

It’s common for rings to fit differently in various seasons. For instance, summer heat can cause water retention and finger swelling, affecting ring size. Even well-fitted rings may feel tight in the summer.

On the contrary, perfectly-sized rings will often rotate in the winter. This occurrence is entirely normal and somewhat inevitable. The objective of ring sizing is to ensure your rings are comfortable most of the time. Due to fluctuations in finger size, achieving a perfect fit 100% of the time is typically not feasible.

What To Do If You Can’t Get Your Rings On

If your rings are feeling tight and you’re having trouble getting them over your knuckle, try this jeweller’s trick: Soapy water.

Soapy water won’t harm your rings’ precious metals and it doesn’t build up like lotion will.

If soap and water does not work, consider wearing your rings at a different time of day. Fingers tend to swell more in the morning, so avoid putting on rings right after waking up. Instead, follow your morning routine before trying again.

If Your Rings Are (Actually) Too Small

If you struggle to put your rings on, regardless of the time of day, it may be necessary to have them resized. Visit us at The Diamond Setter for recommendations on the best course of action.

How Tight is Too Tight?

It is common for rings to feel tighter in hot weather. If your ring feels snug and difficult to remove, that is usually fine. However, if your finger becomes tingly, the ring may be cutting off circulation and should be taken off. If this happens frequently, consider resizing the ring.

What If You Can’t Get Your Ring Off?

If you’re struggling to get a ring off your finger, try the following:

  • Dip your hand in soapy water, or another lubricant to make your finger slippery.
  • Rock the ring back and forth (rather than twisting it) as you work it over your knuckle.
  • Try the wrap method using dental floss.
  • If your finger is very swollen, you can also try the RICE method (rest, ice, compression, and elevation).
    • Submerge your finger in a cup of ice water.
    • Hold your hand and the cup of water above your head for 10 minutes.
    • Remove your hand from the water and use your other hand to compress the finger with the stuck ring.
    • Try gently to remove the ring, adding Windex or another lubricant as needed.
    • If the process doesn’t work immediately, you can repeat it but take breaks in between attempts.

If none of these methods work (or you’d prefer not to try them), stop in to see us at The Diamond Setter located at The Pantiles in Tunbridge Wells. If necessary, we can safely cut your ring off. But have no fear -- we can also help you repair it!
