What To Do With Old Gold Jewellery: Remodel, Offset & Give Heirloom Pieces A New Lease of Life

Remodel, Offset & Give Heirloom Pieces A New Lease of Life

Old gold jewellery can often be transformed into something more wearable and meaningful than leaving it in a box. Whether the pieces are inherited, broken,  or simply no longer your style. Here at the diamond setter we can help.

Remodel existing pieces

In our inhouse workshop we can melt, reshape, or redesign old gold into modern jewellery while preserving sentimental value.

Most of the remodelling ideas I have worked on are to use the metal from the original item then create a new style of ring or piece that you want to wear.

an example of this could also be converting earrings into pendants or charms even reusing stones such as diamonds.

 remodel ideas:

  • Turn multiple rings into one statement ring
  • Convert earrings into pendants or charms
  • Reset old diamonds or gemstones into contemporary settings
  • Transform brooches into necklaces

This works especially well for heirloom jewellery where the emotional and sentimental value matters more than the original design.

Offset the value against a new commission

If you no longer wear yellow gold or white gold and wish to use your old metal to offset a new piece, you can. We start by weighing your gold and giving you a value based on its purity and the current market price. We can then offset this to the cost of the new piece of jewellery for you and even reuse the old stones.

Melt and reuse the actual gold

Want to reuse your gold for a completely new piece?

I've worked on a few projects lately using sentimental gold to create new designs, a lovely couple who previously had their wedding bands and engagement ring made by us, decided to create something special for their grandma. They loved one of our solid heart pendants but wanted to use some of the sentimental gold their grandma had given them to use in their wedding bands

After they chose a dainty solid heart pendant design they had seen in our showroom. I casted the pendant in our onsite workshop.

This uses a method called sandcasting which is a single item casting using only the customers metal and if needed we also add some new metal.

After I casted the customers gold, I then clean up any imperfections or marks using sandpaper until their is a lovely smooth finish ready for polishing.

The finished product is a timeless heart pendant that can be worn knowing its made with gold that has been part of this family for generations and will be for many more.

Repair and modernise

Sometimes old jewellery just needs repairing and restoring. Stone set rings can need new claws which hold the stones securely in place.
I have replaced worn clasps or strengthened worn down links. small updates like different finishes on plain bands can give a new style for example matte or hammered finishes. This keeps the emotional and sentimental value while making the jewellery wearable again.
