It’s tempting to follow the “best deal”. Especially when it comes to something as meaningful (and often costly) as a jewellery. But when that deal comes from overseas, there’s often more to consider than just the price tag.
From quality control on your diamonds or metal carat to aftercare and resizing, creating your jewellery in here at The Diamond Setter, offers reassurance at every step. Working with our on site workshops means transparency, precision, and a piece that’s truly made to last. Not just made to sell.
We recently had the pleasure of commissioning a beautiful bespoke ring for our client, David, who initially approached us with what seemed like an unbeatable quote from a US-based supplier. At first glance, our price appeared significantly higher. However, upon closer inspection, the differences in quality, craftsmanship, material sourcing, and long-term value became clear.
Fortunately, David was open to understanding the finer details behind each quote. This allowed us to guide him through the process, explaining where those cost differences lay, and ultimately present a refined design proposal that aligned more closely with his budget, without compromising on the integrity, beauty, or quality of his perfect ring.
Here in the UK, fine jewellery is most commonly crafted in 9ct or 18ct gold. For engagement rings and milestone pieces, we typically recommend 18ct gold for its durability, richer colour, and higher gold content, ensuring a luxurious finish that’s made to last. Of course, we’re always happy to explore alternative options to suit your preferences.
At The Diamond Setter, we place equal importance on the quality of our diamonds. Every stone we source—whether natural or lab-grown—is fully certified, giving you complete confidence in its authenticity and grading. This commitment to excellence ensures your bespoke jewellery is not only beautiful, but truly exceptional in every detail. A special touch we love to offer is the opportunity for each client to personally hand-select their diamond. Making the experience even more meaningful and uniquely yours.
In short, the quotation we provided reflected these exact specifications, alongside our full bespoke design service. This includes detailed technical drawings and, where required, a resin model of David’s ring, allowing him to fully visualise and refine the design before it is brought to life.
By comparison, the alternative option—while by no means inferior, simply different—was based on a 14ct yellow gold setting and an “off-the-shelf” purchase. This meant there was limited involvement in the design process, with no opportunity to personalise the piece or hand-select and review the grading of the diamonds.

Once we had the opportunity to walk David through these differences, he felt confident that the bespoke route was the right choice for him. It also gave him the freedom to refine his design, ultimately returning to his original preference—a trilogy of radiant-cut diamonds—resulting in a piece that felt far more personal and true to his vision.
